Medically Assisted Detox: How It’s Beneficial

 In addiction

Detox is a natural first step in recovering from a drug or alcohol addiction. For many people, detox is the worst part of the treatment, but it is also the shortest. Detox is how your body rids itself of toxic substances, like alcohol and drugs. Your body will begin to go into withdrawal-like symptoms, that can include fever, sweating, anxiety, and insomnia. Depending on how long you’ve been dependent on alcohol or drugs, you may have some underlying medical issues that could result in life-threatening symptoms during withdrawal. This is one of the reasons why medically assisted detox can be beneficial.

Medically Assisted Detox

In medically assisted detox, our staff is with you every step of the way to help you meet your sobriety goals. Withdrawal can be deterring too many people, especially with the painful and sometimes life-threatening symptoms. With medically assisted detox, you are more likely to get sober and stay sober. As soon as you step through the doors of Lake Hughes Recovery, a doctor will fully assess you, to provide you with treatment better suited for your needs. Our staff will monitor your health and do whatever is possible to make you as comfortable as possible during the recovery process.

How Long Does It Last?

Medically assisted detox takes only a couple days. Often times prescribed drugs like Benzodiazepines, Clonidine, and antidepressants are used to detox your body from the toxic drugs. Although, this sometimes leads to the client forming an addiction to these prescribed drugs, which could extend the recovery process. Through these prescribed drugs, though, the client will detox faster and safer with our staff monitoring them every step of the way. These prescribed drugs are monitored,  controlled, and help the body slowly learn to function without the addictive substance it is used to. During the evaluation, the doctor will decide if a prescribed drug is right for you and figure out the correct dosage. Each prescribed drug provides different functions to help you with the pain of withdrawal and to rid your body of the substance. The drug you are prescribed is also dependent on which substance you were addicted, too. Some drugs were created to help detox of certain drugs. For instance, Methadone is a treatment for opioid addiction, which helps stabilizes the body.

In most cases, the longer you use a substance, the more your body builds a tolerance towards that substance. This tolerance means that you have to take higher doses of the substance to get the same effect. In detox, you will flush out these cravings and your body will learn to function without these substances. This will take time, effort, and patience. Once you have stopped using the substance for about three to seven days and completed your detox, you can move seamlessly into our residential treatment program. This is the next step on your recovery journey.
